CLUB TANGO NEW: Events updated for 2009..... Argentine Tango is a complete dance system, not a single dance. It has enormous improvisational, rhythmic, stylistic and interpretive possibilities. The Argentine Tango includes the lively milonga and romantic waltzes as well as salon, stage and "milonguero" (close embrace) variations. It is the most beautiful and satisfying dance experience that we know of, with its own exquisite and compelling music. Where can I learn to dance Argentine Tango in Calgary? Club Tango Argentino hosts regular social dances every Tuesday at La Pachanga, 918 - 12 Ave. S.W. starting around 7.30 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet other tangueros, practice and even learn a few more steps informally. Every two weeks, with some exceptions, we also host a Saturday evening social dance (Tango and other Latin dances) at local clubs, community halls or restaurants. What is Club Tango Argentino? Club Tango Argentino is a group of Argentine Tango enthusiasts whose goal is to develop a thriving Argentine Tango community in Calgary, with multiple dance venues and regular visits from first-class international teachers and dancers. All of our local teachers have been studying Tango for several years. Is Argentine Tango related to Ballroom Tango? Argentine Tango is the original Tango, developed in the barrios, bars and bordellos of Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century. The Argentine Tango we teach is based on this elegant and very sensual original dance. From about 1912 a "cleaned up" version of tango was introduced into the ballrooms of Europe and North America. The dance was radically changed to simplify teaching and to conform to the social mores of the time and meet the strict conventions of competitive ballroom dancing. The resulting International and North American Tango bears little resemblance to Argentine Tango, either in appearance or sound. Argentine Tango remains an improvisational and intimate social dance that does not lend itself to competition. How long does it take to learn Argentine Tango? Argentine Tango is a challenging dance to learn. You can learn the basics and enjoy social dancing within the first few lessons. To become proficient in using the improvisational potential of this dance and its more exotic vocabulary will typically take a year of regular lessons and often longer. During the first year, expect to repeat many beginners and intermediate classes as your body absorbs the correct form, posture and subtleties of lead and follow. But persevere, it's all worth it. There are so many levels of revelation that it can become addictive! Do I need a partner? No, but it helps. We strive to keep a reasonable gender balance and cooperative atmosphere in classes and workshops. You will also learn faster by switching partners periodically to develop your growing understanding of lead and follow. It is useful, however, to have a regular partner that you can practice with between classes. What should I wear? Regular dress clothes that allow freedom of movement, and dress shoes. It is important to wear shoes that allow easy rotation on the balls of the feet. Leather soles are best for this. Ladies' shoes should if possible have a 2" heel or higher as this aids in correct weight placement. Long skirts are not recommended as they obscure the legs and make it difficult for your partner to perform some of the closer steps that are typical of Argentine Tango. |
